Departure I (1997)

A major project of the ‘Pastorale Forum’ was the international study ‘Departure’. Its aim was to clarify several questions:

What damage in the religious dimension of culture has the communism in its fight against religion in the respective countries left behind?
How did the Churches position themselves in the communist era?
How do they reposition themselves after the Wend?

To this end, a research network was set up with the aim of strengthening scientific infrastructure in the participating countries and initiating interdisciplinary cooperation between theologians, historians and social scientists. The technical infrastructure could also be improved in the research facilities of the participating countries (computers, internet connections, faxmachines, photocopiers).

Methodologically, the study contains aquantitative and a qualitative part. Under the direction of Prof. Miklos Tomka from Budapest, the leading sociologist of religion in Eastern Europe, a socio-religious survey was carried out in ten countries (Lithuania, Poland, Ukraine, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, Slovenia, Croatia, East Germany) with the same questionnaire. At the same time, a series of jointly worked out questions on the life of the Church in communism were explored under the direction of the Szeged Professor for Applied Religious Studies András Máté-Tóth.

The results of the study were made accessible to the scientific community through the multi-volume series "God after Communism". The study counts as one of the few studies comparing countries for this important transitional period of a large part of Europe from the communist dictatorship to democratic freedom.

At the same time, symposia with decision-makers of the church (bishops' conferences, diocesan synods, advanced training conferences, foundations) and politics were organized to discuss the results obtained.
The research network at Departure I. covered numerous institutions in the following countries: Poland, Croatia, East Germany (GDR), Lithuania, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Czech Republic, Ukraine, Hungary.
